  Scope for Intervention

Change is the only constant in today’s India. In a nation of striking contrasts, the chasm between the poor and the burgeoning middle class with its newly found purchasing power has disparately widened. Torn between the glitter of a consumer culture spurred on by globalization, its inherent traditional value base and strong democratic and legal institutions, India is at the cross roads of her destiny.

With impressive growth generated by her corporate sector, there is now an obvious shrinkage of the traditional powers of the State. With corporate bottom lines generating their own agenda, the obvious fall out has been in the areas of Rights, Governance and, of course, the Ecology and the Environment. Yet, the Government has created space for the people and India's vibrant Civil Society Organizations and continues to do so by passing and implementing Acts like the Right To Information, the National Rural Emploment Guarantee Act, the universalization of the Integrated Child Development Scheme etc.

The role of Civil Society Organizations now needs to seen in this light. While there is still a need for hand-pumps and primary schools, there is a strong felt need from all sections of Indian Society for transparency in governance and probity in public life. The eviction of communities and the forcible acquisition of land for industry, rising consumer awareness, the destruction of India’s unique ecology, the rapid degrading of her environment, the denial of social justice for all sections of her citizens, the search for renewable energy sources are some of challenging issues that need the immediate engagement of the Government, the Corporate Sector, Civil Society Organizations and India’s citizens.
