This is a major pilgrimage site for Hindus and the holy island of Sagar is flooded with
thousands of pilgrims from across the globe on the occasion of Makar Sankranti in
mid-January . Initiated as an extension of the Rangbelia project till 1995, Sagar is now a
seperate project. With the usual problems of eroding embankments, cyclones, saline water
inundation and eco-degradation. Established in 1995, it is the youngest the TSRD family .
Sagar project has been taking various intervention for the poor and underpriviledged people
of the Sunderbans in the blocks of Sagar and Namkhana. A total of 133681 people are covered
by the various development programs of the Sagar Project in 38 villages.

Interventions include income generation by skill training in livestock farmimg, veterinary
service, awareness generation about livestock management, better agro-technique, providing
non-formal education and running balwari centres. Group savings are promoted through Self
Help Groups which act as vehicles for awareness creation on social evils and gender
sensitisation.
Basic health services, including Reproductive and Child Health, in collaboration with the
Government, are provided.
Afforestation is a major activity here along with the promotion of herbal home gardens among
the local community for the use and popularisation of traditional ayurvedic remedies.
